The Color Park: Pittsburgh’s Only Graffiti Park

A Creative Adventure for Families in Pittsburgh’s South Side

By Emily Papa, Macaroni KID Publisher November 8, 2024

One of the most memorable and fun experiences I’ve had with my kids recently was visiting the Color Park in Pittsburgh’s South Side with a few old cans of spray paint in tow. While I’ve always been open to letting my kids explore different craft mediums, there hadn’t been a perfect opportunity to safely introduce them to the art of spray painting—until now.

Although we had visited the Color Park before to walk the trail and admire the impressive graffiti and vibrant artwork that decorate the ground and walls, this visit was different. This time, my kids got to join in on the fun as artists themselves. Armed with their cans of paint, they approached the blank spaces with excitement, ready to leave their mark among the intricate pieces created by talented graffiti artists.

Watching my kids experiment with spray paint was exciting. They felt empowered, knowing they had the freedom to create without the usual worry of making a mess. They were mindful not to paint over existing art—a nod of respect to the other creators who had come before them—but the thrill of seeing their hearts and doodles added to the colorful collage was priceless.

A Bit of History

The Color Park was created in the spring of 2017 as a collaboration between Friends of the Riverfront and Pittsburgh artist Baron Batch. Batch, who had been tagging the trail with graffiti, landed in significant legal trouble after his art was reported as vandalism. Inspired by his work, Friends of the Riverfront loved the idea of transforming the otherwise dull, industrial section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail into something more. With the creative help of Batch, the park was designed as a way to bring art and community engagement to the South Side’s riverfront. Over time, it has evolved into a beloved spot where both professional and amateur artists can come together to contribute to a living, ever-changing canvas in Pittsburgh's only graffiti park.

Tips for Parents

  • Bring Your Own Supplies: If you or your kids want to create, bring your own spray paint or art supplies.
  • Dress for the Occasion: Expect a bit of mess. Make sure your kids wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting paint on (and gently remind them not to step on their artwork to track paint on the bottom of their shoes).
  • Respect the Art: Teach your kids to avoid painting over existing pieces to maintain the community spirit of the park. Use the art as a conversation starter and see where it takes you!
  • Plan for a Picnic: There are benches and tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or snacks.

Make It a Day Trip

While you’re in the South Side, why not extend the fun? Head over to nearby Station Square and take a ride on the historic Duquesne or Monongahela Incline for breathtaking views of the city. For lunch, the Hard Rock Cafe offers a family-friendly atmosphere with great food and music. You can even print out this exact ready-to-go itinerary here! Other bucket-list stops include taking a stroll through the shops at Station Square or exploring the South Side’s eclectic range of boutiques and eateries.

The Color Park is more than just a space to admire—it’s a place where Pittsburgh families can immerse themselves in creativity, enjoy the outdoors, and make unique, lasting memories in our hometown. To get to Color Park, use the address 1 S 6th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203.
