Do you have a Messi-obsessed kid like me? Don't miss the new Messi kids' meal at Hard Rock Pittsburgh in Station Square.  While you're at it, try this new twist on Mt. Washington and Station Square for an afternoon of learning. Check out this step-by-step itinerary for Pittsburgh kids that will guide you through an afternoon/evening of fun, history, math, and Messi! Scroll to the bottom to print this complete activity for your next family outing!

Thank you, Hard Rock for hosting our family while we enjoyed a day of family fun at Station Square!

First, find street parking on Mt. Washington near the Grandview Overlook at 200 Grandview Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15211

Make a note of the time so you can calculate the estimated elapsed time of your trip at the end.

Walk southeast to Upper Incline Overlook.  Stop and look out over the city of Pittsburgh.  Play a quick game of I Spy. Pack a quarter or two, so your kids can use the binoculars for an even closer look!

Then, walk down to the Monongahela Incline Station to prepare for an exciting ride down the mountain, followed by a quick walk to Station Square.

Calculate the cost of purchasing a round-trip ticket vs the price of 2 one-way tickets per person.  How much will you save by purchasing round-trip tickets?

There are so many things to do and see with kids in Station Square and lots of history to discover if that's your cup of tea, but we decided to stop by Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh to check out their updated Messi kids menu. The Captain Messi superhero toy joins other beloved Hard Rock menu items, including the Messi Burger, Messi Chicken Sandwich, Messi Kids Burger, and Messi Kids Golden Chicken Sandwich.

Make sure you use the QR code to let your kids play with the Messi Adventure App while you wait for your meals. It's gamey and fun!  Kids love the toys that come with the meal - Hard Rock and Lionel Messi united to create a limited-edition, Captain Messi toy, now available with any Hard Rock Kid’s Menu order while supplies last. Mario got the Messi Burger and said, "This burger be BUSSIN'" which means it's an incredible burger, and commented that the green beans were the best he's ever eaten (score one for delicious vegetables!!!).

I ordered the Messi Burger. Mila got the pasta with marinara sauce. Each child decided they also needed to order dessert. You can find the complete Hard Rock menu at cafe.hardrock.com/pittsburgh.

When the bill comes, show your child how to calculate a tip.  The simplest way to do this is to show that you move the decimal point one place to the left and then double that number.  For example, if your bill is 57.82, move the decimal to 5.782 and double that to equal about $10.  If your child is older, they can add 5.782+5.782, or you could remind them to use their rounding skills and make 5.782=6, then double the 6 for 12. Of course, then they can add the total bill plus the tip.  Life skills!

After dinner, step outside to the state-of-the-art Fountain at Bessemer Court with its Waltzing Waters Liquid Fireworks Show of hundreds of multicolored water jets all choreographed to music and soaring up to 40 feet in the air.

Have a dance party with your kids!  Teach them your favorite dance moves.

Ride the Monongahela Incline back up to Grandview and stop at the overlook again to see how different the city looks at night before heading back to your car.

  • Stop at the previous overlooks to contrast how the city looks during the evening.
  • Make a note of the time.  How much time has passed since you parked your car?

On your drive home, ask your kids to tell you the best part of their day, the worst part of their day, and the wildest part of their day. Be sure to tell them yours, too!
