If you are looking for something fun to do with kids in Baldwin, Bethel Park, Brentwood, Bridgeville, Castle Shannon, Dormont, Jefferson Hills, Mt. Lebanon, Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, Pleasant Hills, South Park, South Side, Upper St. Clair, West Mifflin and the surrounding areas, MacKID South Hills has you covered by finding five fun things for you to do with your kids in the area or a short drive away over the coming week. Macaroni KID South Hills' top picks of fun things to do with kids in the South Hills of Pittsburgh area from Monday,  October 23rd through Sunday, October 29th 2023. Click on the links for all the details.

1.  Halloween Parades 

Who doesn’t love a day where you and your family can dress up in your favorite costumes and show them off to everyone! Wear your scariest mask or your favorite Disney character and make sure to collect all of those sweet treats that come your way. Here are some of the Halloween Parades coming up near you!

  • October 24th at South Park Community Center at 11 a.m. is the Halloween Parade and Puppet Show. The puppet show is perfect for one who loves solving mysteries and puzzles while going on some sweet adventures with your favorite furry friends.
  • On October 28th at 10 a.m. at Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department is the Bridgeville Halloween Parade.
  • Green Tree Public Library is hosting their Halloween Storytime and Costume Parade on October 28th at 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Read spooky Halloween books, sing songs and dance like those funky skeletons. Children ages 2-7 are welcome with their adult/caregiver.
  • Wear your fun Halloween costumes and watch the parade pass by on both sides of the sidewalks at the Pumpkin Patch Parade. It is on October 28th at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery to Washington Elementary at 11 am. 
  • Brookline Halloween and Costume Parade is October 28th at 2 pm. At Brookline Blvd.
  • Monongahela Halloween Parade is at Chess Park starting at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, October 25th. If you want to show off your fun Halloween costumes, sign up at Chess park for the costume contest as well.
  • Go on down to Rossi’s annual Halloween Parade and Costume Contest on October 29th. Bring your kids and family to Rossi’s Flea Market at 11 am to join in all of the fun.

2. All the Places for your Kids to Load Up on Sweet Treats

Candy galore and so much more. These are some great events where you can fill your trick-or-treat buckets up with all kinds of sweet treats. 

  •  Pleasant Hills Candy Crawl is October 24th from 6 pm to 8 pm at Mowry Park. It will kick off with the costume parade, followed by the trunk or treat, ending with a grand finale with fireworks at 7:30 p.m. 
  • Enjoy a festive event at Bombash Botanical Skincare Co that combines trunk or treat, voting on the best-decorated trunk (or tent), and 50/50 raffle. This event is from 12 pm to 2 pm on October 28th.
  • All you ghosts and ghouls enjoy a Trunk or Treat at Kenny Ross Ford South. The first 100 costumed kiddos there will receive a special trick-or-treat bag. Come down on October 28th from 1 to 4 pm.
  • Trunk or Treat at Door Church Brentwood is on October 28th from 5 to 8 pm.
  • On the streets of Cranberry on October 27th enjoy a fun evening trick or treating! Start around 5 pm and enjoy the spooky evening til 7 pm.

3. The Perfect Halloween Costume Creation at Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

Join all the designers from Style 412 for a Halloween-themed fashion workshop and learn how to create a unique Halloween style of your very own creation on October 28th at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh from 1 to 3 pm. Another event at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is the Upcycle Costume Making on October 29th. Artist Imani Batts and seamstress Maddie Macek will help upcycle your costume with found and thrifted garments, and craft supplies from noon to 5 pm. 

4. Spine Chilling Attractions

  •  Phantom Fall Fest is sure to leave you shaking in your boots at Kennywood. Tickets start at $37.50 but with CertifiKid, you get a single ticket for $34.94. Kennywood’s Phantom Fall Feast and Fright Nights are unforgettable and have many attractions to experience, read more about each individual attraction within this Phantom Fall Feast, Fright Night, and Kenny’s Trick or Treat.
  • Allen’s Haunted Hayrides was started in October 1979, by 2 brothers, Richard and Ronald Allen, and ran in conjunction with the, then, Uniontown Greater Jaycees. They operated these hayrides together for a few years. Then, the 2 brothers operated the hayrides on their own. Throughout the years, the course of the hayride route has been altered. A road was put through a forest, and bonfires, carnival rides, and games were also added to the hayride attraction. Bonfires are by reservation only. The carnival rides are included with the price of the hayride ticket. Stop by on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday on 26-28. On Thursday It starts from 6 pm - 9 pm and Friday and Saturdays are 6 pm to 10 pm at Allen’s Haunted Hayrides & Tavern of Terror.
  • Join the Gateway Clipper on the Haunted Three Rivers cruise, where the rivers come alive with tales of ghosts & mysteries that will send shivers down your spine. Step aboard a Haunted Riverboat on October 27 at 6:15 pm. Get your tickets for adults at $32 and children ( 1-12 years old) at $20.
  • Enter the era of the zombie apocalypse at Urban Assault Paintball Games, October 13th through October 28th and get the chance to face your fears and stop the outbreak! The entry pass is $25 dollars and it includes the haunted trail, 750 rounds of ammo, an outdoor movie theater, and a firing range. The escape room is $35 for up to 3 people or $60 for up to 6 people with rounds being 15 minutes. Find your tickets HERE if you want to take control of the outbreak and complete your mission.

5. After Dark Walks

Take on a new type of thrill with going for hikes at night. Explore Round Hill Park to see what happens when the sun goes down. Make sure to bring water and wear closed-toe shoes on October 29th from 7:30 to 9:00. Experience a Haunted Walking Tour of Dormont at Back Alley Brewing on October 27th starting at 8 pm. Travel through the neighbor's learning of tales of death, the macabre, and the supernatural. Another Haunted walking tour is taking place on October 27th as well.  Haunted Walking tour of Carnegie will be hosted at the parking lot of Northwest Savings Bank from 8 pm to 9:30 pm. Go on a cemetery scavenger hunt if you dare.

6. Fall Crafts

While the air is crispy and the leaves are falling join Bridgeville Public Library for Apple & Potato Prints for ages 2-4 this Tuesday, October 24th at 10:30 am. While at South Park Township Library experience a beautiful time creating a Fall Glue Gun Art for adults and teens on Wednesday, October 25th at 6 pm.

7. Halloween Crafts

Halloween is in NINE DAYS. That is super exciting and this is the best time to plan for your favorite Halloween crafts. 

  • Haunted Gingerbread House making is taking place at South Park Township Public Library at 4:30 pm for grades 4-6. This is an in-person activity and also a drop-in activity so you can stop anytime during the timeframe.  Also have the chance to create Halloween Peeps Houses on Thursday, October 26th at Bridgeville Public Library from 5-6 pm for ages 12-18 years old.

8. Halloween Parties

  • It’s time to PARTTYY. Come on down on October 27th to Phipps Conservatory for the Halloween Happenings: A Boo-tacnical Bash. Phipps Gardens is a perfect place for family fun to celebrate Halloween.  
  • Pumpkin Party at Peters Township Community Recreation Center is calling my name. Share a story, craft, and play games for $8 on October 24th. 
  • The Gateway Clipper is the best place for some Halloween fun. Sightsee Pittsburgh while in your costume while spending time on water with frightfully friendly characters and tons of fun prizes. Tickets for adults are $32, children ages of 1-12 are $20, and infants are $5.

9. Fun Library Nights 

  • Upper St. Clair Township Library is hosting a Monster Night on October 25th starting at 5:30. Enjoy a night of spooktacular fun and games.
  • Are you a Harry Potter fan? Well, Bethel Park Public Library is hosting a Magic Treats for Muggles on October 25th at 6 pm. Find out what the Hogwarts House the hat will place you in while creating these fun treats.

10. Plan Ahead 

  • Byham Theater on November 10th is showing Giraffes Can’t Dance starting at 7 pm. Watch all the other jungle animals bust a move while Gerald the Giraffe has a hard time finding his groove without every step being a clumsy one. The wise cricket helps Gerald find his perfect song so that he can dance to the beat of his own drum. Cost ranges from $25.25 to $50.25. Make sure to reserve your spot with your own ticket and have a chance to watch Gerald find his perfect song and dance this coming November. On November 24th and November 25th see The Science of Santa with Doktor Kaboom as he recreates all of Santa’s wonders by using basic physics! Ticket prices are $25.25 to $40.75.
