I'm always looking for great items from local businesses to stick in my kid's Easter baskets. I recently stumbled across the cutest soaps on Instagram, @salandsissy, and after chatting with Jay (the mom behind the brand), wanted to share this great find with all of you! Let's hear what Jay has to say about Sal + Sissy Soaps and learn where you can get these adorable basket stuffers.
What is the story behind your business? How did you get started?
My children (Vita and Salvatore AKA Sal + Sissy) love to do meaningful crafts. One day they presented the idea of making their own soap as a fun family activity. They were enamored by the fact that we could make something for fun that they could actually use - how fun and exciting! We hoped on Amazon and searched soap-making kits. All the kit options we scrolled through contained harsh chemicals, dyes, artificial scents, etc. We were disappointed by the available options, but not discouraged from the idea itself and doing it our own way. From there, we did extensive research on clean handmade soap making and all that it entailed. We ordered the ingredients for our first recipe. Clean and organic products can tend to have a muted or “boring” look to them - so we had to make it fun, of course. That is when we decided to “keep it fun” by making our soap with unique shapes like hearts, rainbows, shamrocks, etc - shapes that would spark joy. Our first lavender soap turned out so beautifully that we decided to make a large batch and gift it to our family and friends - who all loved it! From there Sal + Sissy Clean Handmade Soaps was born - through which we have bonded as a family over the values of work ethic, product integrity, and giving back to a worthy cause, meaningful to us (the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation).
What are some fun facts about you or your business?
Good. Clean. Fun. We pour that sentiment into our products! Our soaps are good for your skin, handmade with integrity, and also do good for others - $1 per sale is donated to the free care fund at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh! Our soaps are clean - made with all-natural and organic ingredients only! Our soaps are fun! - we handcraft aesthetically pleasing shaped soaps intended to spark joy regardless of age, gender or skin type!
What are you most proud of?
The quality of our products. The standard of ingredients that we use is second to none. And that every time a soap sale is made we take joy in knowing that we are raising funds for a worthy cause close to our hearts. We’re proud of that, and we hope that our customers feel great after using our products and continue to feel great knowing they’ve directly contributed to helping a family in need.
