Fall Fun at The Waterfront: Shop, Dine, Play, and Stay in Pittsburgh

By Emily Papa, Macaroni KID South Hills Publisher October 28, 2024

Looking for a one-stop destination to make the most of a family day in Pittsburgh? Whether you're searching for Halloween costumes, a delicious meal, fun activities, or shopping, The Waterfront in Homestead, PA has it all. Our family spent an entire day exploring everything this riverside shopping center offers—and here’s why it should be at the top of your fall family bucket list.

This writer and her family were generously hosted by The Waterfront, but all experiences and opinions are her own.

Shop, Dine, Play, and Stay: A Day at The Waterfront

Costume Shopping at Spirit Halloween

We kicked off our day by diving into the Halloween spirit—literally! Spirit Halloween is your go-to spot for all your Halloween must-haves: costumes, decorations, and accessories. From spooky masks to cute costumes, everyone in the family found something to love. Plus, it's the perfect way to get ready for trick-or-treating! Tip: Shopping early ensures you’ll snag the best costume options before they sell out.  spirithalloween.com

Even though these boys already knew what they wanted to be for Halloween, they had so much fun exploring the diverse costume selection at Spirit Halloween.

Lunch at Burgatory

After working up an appetite, we made our way to Burgatory, where the menu was packed with burgers, fries, and delicious milkshakes. I’m always thrilled with the kids' meal options that include an entrée, drink, a side of homemade chips, carrots, and ranch. The menu says that kids with a clean plate earn a free float, but the server was kind enough to let our kids enjoy their floats with their meals, eliminating any pressure that they “had” to have a clean plate. Burgatory is the ideal stop for families looking for a relaxed atmosphere with fun food options everyone will enjoy. burgatorybar.com

The kids entertained themselves with the range of games offered on their kids' menus.

They all participated in drawing their burger with the hopes of earning a free shake for their next visit.

Sammy J. enjoyed his free kids' float with his meal.

The hubby splurged on a healthy salad.

While mama indulged in a delicious Caramel Pretzel Milkshake!

Fall Foliage Family Courtyard Strolls

With the fall leaves changing colors, we couldn't resist a walk through The Waterfront's courtyard. It was the perfect way to enjoy a bit of downtime while soaking in the beautiful sunshine and crisp autumn air. My kids always enjoy playing the giant Connect Four, and this fall there are photo-worthy spots throughout, making it ideal for families who love snapping seasonal pictures (and your TikTok crazed tweenagers). We especially loved the combination of spooky Halloween decorations along the perimeter of the courtyard and fall decor at the fountain—definitely a highlight! The Waterfront is always hosting the cutest family-friendly events in the courtyard, so make sure you check out their website before you head down! waterfrontpgh.com

Girls day!

"Look, mom! An umbrella!"

Unique Shopping at Painted Tree Boutique

Painted Tree Boutique was our next destination. If you love shopping locally or are on the hunt for unique finds, this shop is a must. It’s like walking through a live Pinterest board—with handmade gifts, trendy fashion, and cute accessories for every style. The store is sectioned off into smaller "boutiques," but everything is on one POS, so you only have to check out once! This is the ultimate store to take your kids to when they do their holiday shopping and need something for everyone on their list! Whether you're looking for a personal treat or gifts for the holidays, you'll definitely find something special here. paintedtree.com

Family Game Time at Dave & Buster’s

No family day would be complete without a little fun, and Dave & Buster's Homestead delivered! The kids spent hours playing games, and even Pap got in on the action. From arcade classics to virtual reality games, there’s something for all ages. Dave & Buster's is a fantastic option for a fun time if you're visiting with a mixed-age group, and they are constantly throwing family-friendly events, too! daveandbusters.com

Dave & Buster's is the perfect place for us (coming from the South Hills) to meet up with "Bad Pappy," who lives in Monroeville.

My son loves the challenge of skill games...

While my daughter prefers to win tickets, with games of chance!

Who would have thought you could win so many prizes at Dave & Busters that you would need to leave with a shopping bag?!

Convenient Shopping While You Wait

One of the best parts about The Waterfront is the convenience of having so many businesses in a walkable spot. With some time to kill before our dinner reservations, the boys explored Rocket Fizz, a candy and soda shop filled with nostalgic treats and fun finds for the kids. The girls stopped into Ulta Beauty—because what tweenager can resist checking out new skincare products and makeup deals? The best part about this was that while they did a quick little shop, Mom got to sit and enjoy the fire pit on the patio of Shorty's Tap x Taco. The Waterfront makes it easy to turn wait times into productive shopping adventures or a moment to relax!

The boys found some great finds in Rocket Fizz and couldn't wait to show them off!

Multigenerational Dinner at Bravo Italian Kitchen

We wrapped up our day with dinner at Bravo Italian Kitchen, Pap's favorite! It was the perfect spot for a multigenerational meal. The Italian-inspired menu made it easy for everyone to find something they loved, and the welcoming atmosphere made it feel like the best way to end our day together. My kids love that they get to play with pizza dough before their meal comes. If you're planning a family dinner—especially with grandparents and kids—Bravo is a wonderful choice.
