By Emily Papa, Macaroni KID Pittsburgh Publisher July 10, 2024

Nestled along the shores of Lake Erie, Presque Isle is an idyllic destination for families seeking a convenient beach getaway from Pittsburgh. Just a short two-hour drive from the Steel City, this stunning state park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, recreational activities, and educational opportunities that make it an ideal spot for a family day trip. Recently my family went on a fall weekend getaway from Pittsburgh to Erie, PA where we were graciously hosted by Visit Erie and Presque Isle was at the top of our list!

My family and I were graciously hosted by Visit Erie, but all opinions expressed are my own.

There's nothing like being with your family on a sandy shore!

Our Adventure at Presque Isle:

Our family's adventure began with a visit to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. This impressive facility is dedicated to the conservation and protection of the park's natural resources and offers a wealth of interactive exhibits and educational programs. The kids were fascinated by the displays, which included everything from local wildlife to the history of the Great Lakes. It was an excellent introduction to the natural wonders we were about to explore.

After our educational tour, we headed to one of the many beaches at Presque Isle. Despite it being a cool day, my son Sammy J. couldn’t resist the tease of the sand and water, tearing off his shirt and diving right into his beach adventures. The beaches are clean, well-maintained, and perfect for families. With miles of sandy shores, there’s plenty of space to spread out, build sandcastles, and enjoy the fresh lake breeze.

  2. Know your Beaches: Each beach at Presque Isle has something unique to offer, some with restrooms, changing areas, ADA accessibility, and even concessions. You can find a nice breakdown of each beach's offerings here
  3. Snacks and Water: While there may be concession stands, packing a cooler with snacks and drinks can save time and money. Picnic areas are abundant, so you can enjoy a family meal with a view.
  4. Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Even on cooler days, the sun can be strong at the beach.
