7 Questions to Make Sure Your Nail Salon Nails Safety

Local Nail Salon Disrupts Industry with Radical Safety Steps

March 27, 2023

Frenchies, a new, groundbreaking nationwide nail salon franchise with local salons, goes above and beyond - revolutionizing the industry with innovative safety strategies to protect patrons.

In fact, they always have. Frenchies was clean before it was cool (and mandated).

Frenchies has polished its processes to go beyond the required Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations. The company wants to warn customers about unhealthy salon practices, so it created the…

Top 7 Questions to Make Sure Your Nail Salon Nails Safety

1) Do they clear the air? How does your salon sanitize the air you breathe? Frenchies studios are equipped with a special ventilation system that cleans the air every 16 minutes. Rather than recirculate, the ventilation systems at Frenchies removes the stale air and pumps in fresh air – capturing contaminants in the transfer. Most other salons are not well ventilated as evidenced by the chemical smells that hit you in the face when you walk in the door.

2) Where’s the washing? Where are the washing stations and does your specialist soap up before your service? Before every service, both Frenchies’ guests and nail specialists wash their hands at a special hand washing area. In some cases, it is located right at the front door.

3) What are the Sterilization strategies? How and how often do they sterilize equipment? Turns out, many salons don’t sterilize tools, only sanitize. At Frenchies, they do both. All metal implements are thoroughly sterilized in a 3-step process. Tools are first washed in soap and water, sanitized in a hospital grade disinfectant, and then placed in a medical- grade autoclave which sterilizes. An autoclave is the only way to kill 100% of all bacteria and viruses. By the way, we call the autoclave “Coco”

4) Is there a Ten-Minute Rule? For thorough disinfection, there needs to be a disinfection time frame to ensure cleanliness. At Frenchies, all hard surfaces are wiped down with anti-bacterial cleaner after each guest. At the pedicure area, bowls are soaked in hospital grade disinfectant for a full ten minutes prior to another guest starting their service. Other salons have guests slide in and out of chairs within seconds of each other, leaving no time for true disinfection.

5) Do they Jettison the Jets? Jets in pedicure bowls with interior piping can trap harmful bacteria. At Frenchies, they got rid of bowls with jets. Instead, they use freestanding basins for foot soaks with no jets or pipes to trap harmful bacteria. Check it out. And no need to put plastic liners in the bowls to provide sanitary foot care, so as not to dump extra waste in our landfills.

6) To Share is NOT to Care? Does your salon dispose of all tools after one use? At Frenchies, they never re-use disposable items such as files, buffers, and orangewood sticks. Tools that can’t be sterilized in the autoclave are used once, then sent home with the guest or tossed out.

7) Is Your Treatment Toxic? Acrylics and dips (crushed acrylics) contain chemicals that are harmful to your health. Plus, have you ever considered how many people have dipped into that acrylic powder before you?

The Toxic Trio (Chemicals in nail polishes, hardeners, and glues)

 Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) can irritate the respiratory tract.

 Toluene can irritate the lungs and respiratory tract. Toluene is also linked to the

development of asthma.

 Formaldehyde can cause coughing, trouble breathing and asthma-like attacks.

**Frenchies does not use acrylic nails or dips because of these chemicals. Any of these substances can induce respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, throat irritation or shortness of breath when you breathe in the chemical fumes.
