1. Dance to the beat

March is Music in Our Schools Month. But why limit it to school? Check out these stories for at-home music fun:

And take the initiative by signing up your kids for lessons at Accent Music Academy in Baldwin where your first lesson is always free, or by visiting any of these businesses in the South Hills that offer music lessons.

2. Cook together

Did you know March is National Nutrition Month? Make it fun for the whole family by including everyone in the kitchen. Check out some of these local businesses that offer cooking classes for kids to learn their way around a meal:

  • Crate Cooking School - located in Greentree, Crate Cooking School is still offering both virtual and in person cooking lessons for kids and adults. March's cooking calendar includes a Fat Tuesday menu, Lunch and Learn, Soups On and Crunch and Learn cooking with kids. Learn more and sign up for classes here http://www.cratecook.com/classes
  • Gaynor's School of Cooking offers a large selection of kids programs throughout the year (and summer camps too). The one that excites me the most is the teen sushi making class! Find their full 2022 class and summer camps here gaynorsschoolofcooking.com
  • FORMA Pasta - okay, okay, this might not be an in person cooking class, but I had to give a shout-out to this business I can't stop drooling over on Instagram. FORMA Pasta is a woman owned business that makes pasta fresh by hand daily, right here in the South Hills. They offer a monthly pasta box subscription service where you can try some of their latest creations without having to leave your home! https://www.formapgh.com/

3. Read a book

March 2 is Read Across America Day, the perfect day to start that new book as a family. Visit Beyond Bedtime Books in Dormont for some great family-friendly reading picks and wish them a happy 12-year birthday while you're there!

4. Spoil those tootsies

Yep, what you've heard is true: March 6-13 is Feet Week. There's really a week for everything these days, isn't there? Celebrate your hardworking tootsies (and maybe take an afternoon break for yourself!) by heading to Frenchies Modern Nail Care South Hills for a pedicure. Your feet will thank you.

5. Plan a staycation

Whether for spring break or just a weekend day, plan a staycation right here at home and act like a tourist! Here's a fun one-day itinerary:

Let's start with an indulgent breakfast, since we're on a staycation after all. Scoop up some donuts and coffee from Just Good Donuts on Carson Street in South Side. Prefer more of a sit down meal? Gab & Eat in Carnegie is a great way to find your morning fuel.

Next, we're going to escape the cold and visit the National Aviary for their brand-new, sun-filled Tropical Paradise exhibit. For those of you that participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count with us, this day trip is sure to delight!

Your little explorers will love visiting the fascinating birds that call tropical habitats home. With opportunities for interactive experiences and animal encounters, it will be hard to believe that you are still in Pittsburgh! Don't forget to book your timed tickets in advance as the National Aviary is following CDC and Allegheny County occupancy guidelines to ensure guest safety.

To end your day of fun in the sun, book at room at a hotel with an indoor pool like the Holiday Inn Express in Bridgeville or the Courtyard by Marriott in the Waterfront.

6. Clean!

OK, maybe this isn't your idea of a good time, but we love a good deep spring-cleaning. Crank up your family's favorite tunes and give everyone a job to do. Or better yet, think about hiring a cleaning company to visit your home regularly ... it can be a sanity-saver for a busy family!

7. Plant something

It's been a looooong winter but spring arrives in March! Not only that, but March 12 is National Plant a Flower Day! I already have our greenhouse ready for our starters! Follow us on Instagram to see what we're planting this year and get to Chapon's Greenhouse or Dupree's Garden Center and buy yourself something green.

8. Eat that second piece of pie

March 14 is Pi Day! Make a pie (we love this paper bag apple pie) or get lost in all the chocolatey, peanut buttery, caramelly goodness of the new Buckeye Pie at Eat'n Park!

9. Trap that leprechaun

Check out our list of 17 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day With Kids then head out to Mulligan's in West Mifflin for some traditional Irish grub.

10. Pet allllll the puppies

March 23 is National Puppy Day ... but isn't every day Puppy Day? It should be! Take your fur baby for some 📸 St Patrick’s Day pet photos and Pet Blessings this March!

11. Enjoy weekend waffles

International Waffle Day is in March. Make a fun waffle bar at home for kids to choose their own toppings, or head to your favorite breakfast spot in town! My family is dying to try the waffles at Waffles, INCaffeinated on East Carson!
