February 28, 2021

With children’s wellbeing and entertainment at the forefront this year, 2 young ladies did not let 2020 go to waste and are inspiring their community to give back and be kind through the art of writing. The creative children’s books, the Della and Lila Series, was co-written by mom Brianne Mitchell and her two young daughters Della and Lila. “For years when Della was telling us her stories, I would always say to myself ‘I should write this down.’ One day, in March of 2014, I actually did,” Brianne Mitchell says, “I grabbed my laptop, started typing, and the story of Della and Lila Meet the Monongahela Mermaid was born.”

The three books: Della and Lila Meet the Monongahela Mermaid, Della and Lila Meet the Monongahela Monster and Della and Lila and the Treasure Adventure tell adventurous tales from the eyes of a child, “It was a cold and snowy night but somewhere, in Della’s beautiful, sweet mind, she was swimming with mermaids, river otters, and ducks. As Della’s story began to unfold –  I was mesmerized,” says Brianne.

The creative children’s book series most notably puts a huge emphasis on compassion, friendship, kindness, and community. The mission was always to develop early childhood literacy, encourage creativity, and cultivate environmental and community service awareness in the minds of our youth. “We promote love, kindness, and acceptance of others and ourselves. We are fully committed to the education and wellbeing of children and families in southwestern Pennsylvania through special service programs and charitable donations,” the Mitchell family is quoted.

The family-owned series from Pittsburgh donates all proceeds to the nonprofit, The River Fund, in effort to help children and families in need. The River Fund provides educational and enrichment opportunities for children in southwestern PA. The River Fund also contributes to holiday gift drives, back-to-school supply drives, coat drives, and other charitable organizations that help children and families both in SWPA and all over the world.

Della and Lila work very hard to raise money and awareness for a multitude of local causes. They volunteer their time and energy for historical preservation purposes, scholarship funds, memorial races, litter clean-up programs, church functions, and youth sports groups.
