Open Streets Pittsburgh

Walk, run, bike & skate through Burgh Streets! Sunday, 5/31 Sunday, 6/28 Sunday, 7/26

May 10, 2023

Bike Pittsburgh (BikePGH) will once again host three OpenStreetsPGH events this summer in locations across the city, from 10 AM – 2 PM on the last Sundays of May, June, and July. Presented by UPMC Health Plan, OpenStreetsPGH is a free community event series that temporarily closes roads to car traffic and invites Pittsburghers to reimagine their streets as places for people, not just cars. The event is organized by BikePGH, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit, working on behalf of the community to make Pittsburgh safe, accessible, and friendly to pedestrians and people who bike.

“Bike Pittsburgh is thrilled to present three new routes for OpenStreetsPGH this summer. Over 10 miles of city streets will be closed to vehicles and given back to the people for the eighth year of this beloved event series. We invite you to see what’s possible when city streets are designed for people instead of cars, and engage with our mission to make biking and walking safe and commonplace for all Pittsburghers” said Kéya Joseph, Events Director of BikePGH.

“UPMC Health Plan is proud to once again support OpenStreetsPGH. This is a fun day for the entire family and riding your bike can be a pleasant and effective way to improve your health.  Please join us at this wonderful event”, Dr. James Schuster, chief medical officer, UPMC Health Plan.

Attracting over 50,000 guests each summer, OpenStreetsPGH partners with 100+ local businesses and organizations to curate an exciting array of activities like free fitness classes, community arts performances, food vendors, and special promotions. Each route includes three Activity Hubs with themed partners and activations: a Health & Wellness Hub featuring group exercise classes, an Arts & Culture Hub featuring performances by local artists and musicians, and the Kids & Family Hub featuring BikePGH Kids Bicycling Education and family activities.

Unlike other events, OpenStreetsPGH does not require a complete street closure. At each event, vehicle drivers will be able to cross and access several intersections along the closed route. OpenStreetsPGH is inspired by the open streets movement – a global phenomenon promoting healthy outdoor activity and community engagement using city streets. Pittsburgh is one of hundreds of cities worldwide (100+ in North America alone) holding open streets events.
